In October 1989 my father and I saw the Mazda MX-5 at the Melbourne Motor Show (at which I believe it was launched [?]) and we were both fascinated by this little classic red sports car which didn't have the knock-off wire wheels, twin SUs or any of the things we associated with sports cars.

When my father lay in hospital in 2008, I became dríven to find a clone of that Classic Red MX-5 and after a long search I bought the most original one I could find. According to your information here I succeeded better than I could have hoped: the VIN is JMONA306100100055. I believe this shows it is one of the first shipment of 200 cars and a full brother of the Melbourne Motor Show car.

May I add: MX-5/VIC/ Sept. '89 - VIN is JMONA306100100055 to your list?

& just so you guys know - the O where you've written JMONA is actually a zero not the letter O - as far as I know australian VIN numbers never contain the letter O.

Well spotted! The oldest Aussie-delivered one recorded so far. August 1989 build too (most of the first delivery were apparently September 1989 build). What a shame that the car is so shabby.

Well spotted! The oldest Aussie-delivered one recorded so far. August 1989 build too (most of the first delivery were apparently September 1989 build). What a shame that the car is so shabby.

I know this post has been dead for a while, but a similar thread has come up on the UK forum. A question if you don't mind.
All the Jap import cars in the list, except mine have a VIN starting with 6U9000NA6CEXXXXX. Is this the vin plate number, is it stamped in the bulkhead, is it on a separate plate riveted onto the bulkhead?

Australia adds the 6U9000 to make the chassis numbers conform with the 17 digits that are required for Australian Chassis numbers.

The NA6CE should be stamped on the firewall.

just did that and I got 1989.08.02, so it seems my entry should be
