Well, if in doubt read this: (Victorian based - Vicroads)

Regulations for fog lights and driving lights.

Front fog lights

May emit a white or yellow light.
Need to be operated independently of headlights.
Should only be used in hazardous weather conditions.

Rear fog light

Must emit a red light.
Should have an indicator light.
Must be at least 100 millimetres from brake lights.
Must only be used in hazardous weather conditions.

Driving lights

Must be wired to operate only when the headlights are on high-beam.
Are considered equivalent to headlights, so their use is illegal when driving within 200 metres of another road user.
Must emit a white light.

So, put that in your pipe and smoke it miata!

If you live in Vic, basically you can do what you want. That being said, what I dont understand is that if a vehicle meets ADR's and has driving/fog lights fitted, it would seem that laws in certain states contradict themselves. After all an ADR is an ADR and it has to pass a legal benchmark.

The rear fog lights in my wives Lantra are right next to the brake lights. Incidently they have never been turned on.

In W.A. the fine is something like $250 and 3 demerit points.

Cops love pulling over WRX drivers.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

The overhead warning message boards on some sydney roads now are pointing out fog lights are illegal to use when the weather's not crap. I was very pleased to see that, usually the board are spouting some useless crap.

On another note many years ago, before I bought the MX5 (call it 8 years then) I was driving to canberra in a hired hyundai (I'd booked a commodore but they stuffed up the booking :( ) and there was a blank switch on the dash, so I pressed it a few times and nothing seemed to change, so I pressed it a bunch more times while looking everywhere inside and outside the car to see what it did, eventually I noticed the scenery behind me flashing red in sequence with my button pushes.

Wonder what the people behind me thought???
