If it helps my ex NA6 Auto is now putting out 182 RWHP naturally aspirated. There is a nice HP to target. I can PM you details if you like.

If it was me I'd probably sell both cars and buy a super clean bone stock NB8B or manual NA and work from that, you'd have plenty of money left over for mods I assume.

Mine was debt free
. I have PM'ed the OP the details so hopefully he can make an informed decision. As said we should not stand in the way of somebody and their obsesssion rather give them the tools to make an informed decision and highlight our mistakes. If they are obsessed enough there is nothing we can or should do!
Do the Auto NA6 build, but use my engine specs and go turbo! Charlie91's build on steroids!

It will be worth giving OMGPHAM a PM or ring. He went exactly from an S15 to a NA6. He had it in his blogs. http://omgpham.com/mx-5-build
NA6-Rolled off Mt Nebo
NB SE-Sold for investment property deposit, then crashed by the buyer months later

Re: To sell... or not to sell, 'tis the question.
An auto is without doubt a car that some prefer - i.e. many people cannot drive a manual- others may have a physical problem, others are not interested in fiddling with gears and others merely find it much easier in traffic etc. 90% of cars at least are autos in Australia. An auto can be dríven by anyone but a manual is rarely popular with women and a car is often shared.
Sell the auto to someone who wants an auto and then a useful car is not trashed. A good auto may well actually command a premium based on scarcity and converting an existing car costs money and time for what result?
There are any number of manual MX5s for sale and at low prices. .
If someone wants a hobby of doing up cars it can be done at all levels- spend mega dollars or DIY second hand etc. Whatever way its done it always cost more than buying a car already modded. Its is good to have the facilities. Some folks will not spend the rent or the mortgage or the kids education on a flash set of wheels in poor taste and others just never put the brakes on. But it does not mean it cannot be done without going overboard or making sensible choices or picking the right vehicle.
Restoring MX5s is budget stuff- try restoring established classics and then the money gets really serious.

neither is an s15..depending on what/how you use it for. the definition of 'practical' varies from person to person.

you bring up a good point around people who actually want an auto.. currently there are non for sale in NSW on car sales so this may work in my favour. most of the responses here are telling me to sell the na.. which at this stage given the work involved VS $$ & time etc.. i might just do.
one thing ive learned is 'going with the flow' sometimes works for you.. & other times can be a pain in the a$$. the other thing is keep your car seperate from the MRS!

Agreed keep car modification costs separate from your partner, at least play it down
However I'm on record as being pro keep the auto NA and modify it!

Re: To sell... or not to sell, 'tis the question.
Of all new and used cars on carsales at the moment there are 158,581 autos of 228,687 total leaving 70,106 manuals so 70% auto 30% manual.
Saying only 10% are manual is therefore 200% wrong, although we must always remember Churchill's words on such matters.

That number's probably more of new car sales rather than the total carpark, counting the dual-clutch thingies as autos.

I'd still say oil gas and mining etc fleet buys are nearly 10% of the market and I would say they would be 90% manual.

Of new cars on carsales 17,907 are manual, 48,509 auto. Manual = 27%, auto 73%. DSG etc has caused surprisingly little change compared with the total market.
