Re: Dealer Negotiations
We made an offer weeks ago but only came up 500 from that. In hindsight I think we were lucky as the salesman was sick this week so dealt with the manager and missed the middle mans' commission.

Nice job! I'm thinking more and more it all comes down to how the dealer is feeling and what time of the month it is.. probably worth considering trying to aim for end of month, NYE is close approaching

Re: Dealer Negotiations
We just bought an upmarket sedan from a dealer. The trade in price for our Mazda6 was ridicules, as I expected, so we advertised it on Carsales and Gumtree at a price that I thought was fair and we sold it 3 days later to the first person to look at it for $4,500 more than the trade in price.
As for pricing on the NCs, you have a range of $18 – 25K (yes they are cheaper on the east coast) so I’d expect that the ones at the lower end of the range you’d get for $16.5K and the top end, no more than $22K with some smart negotiations. Remember if you are going through a dealer that the price should include your on road costs in the deal.
Why not contact the local MX5 Club and see if any members have a car for sale? It may take a bit more bargaining because all members think their car is worth more than it is worth but generally you will end up with a well looked after car.

Re: Dealer Negotiations
Because the trade is where all the profit is at for the dealer. What you should be looking at if trading is the changeover figure at the end of the day, where they offer a lower trade they maybe able to drop the price of the vehicle.
In terms of when to buy, aim for delivery at the end of the month or even better the end of a quarter.
When I bought my current work ute, I went to the dealer the weekend before the EOFY, told the salesman the exact spec I wanted with a list of colours in preference, where a ute in the exact spec I wanted was local to him so he could do a stock swap and had my finance sorted deposit ready to go and told him what I was going to pay as a driveaway price. It was either going to be the easiest sale of the weekend for him, or if he couldn't do it for the price the hardest sale as I was prepared to fly interstate to pick up a ute from a Sydney dealer for a little less.

Yeah, tell me about it.They offer an insulting price that's about half what the dealers are selling them for. Advertised on Cars Guide ATM but no interest so far.
Wow imagine a dealer trying to make a profit, the bastards!

Re: Dealer Negotiations
I know they have to make a buck, but I just get a bit disappointed when it's about an 80% mark up.

Try selling new cars then, sometimes only a few hundred positive, just to do a freakin deal for the month!

Re: Dealer Negotiations
Don't buy in the rain - unless the car is dry indoors.
Don't buy at night.
Raindrops and poor light disguise paint imperfections and poor body panel fit.
I used to be in the trade and follow some cars fairly closely. Buy a few for others too.
Watch car sales daily - be educated about price, kms and condition.
Good advice earlier about two keys and remotes. Check they work and write it into the contract.
Agree NC prices are falling and will continue to do so. I have near mint 2006 roadster update in stormy blue. 50 000 kms and Mazda service history. I think I'd struggle to get over $18 k if I had to offload it.

Re: Dealer Negotiations
Thanks everyone for the great advice, has been really helpful. I will keep everyone posted with how it goes, also probably need to sell my current car first too!
