hmmm.. some interesting & informative points by some..to clarify somethings here..
lets not compare the 2 cars.. (its like comparing apples & oranges) they are both very different & have their unique attributes. now when i originally purchased the mx i didnt have too much knowledge around it & really just went with the flow.. it was also bought for my partner to drive.. hence buying an auto, otherwise no way i would buy an auto mx, i was actually wanting an NB..but since owning the na for a while.. it does have a certain character about it that you cant find in newer cars, more so than the nb (haven dríven both now). in terms of selling the na im not sure anyone would even buy it being auto & i wouldn't get much, also my mentality is having gone through purchasing it & to re-sell id lose money either way, it's a project /hobbie..& will be built up over a longer course of time (not too sure how long), the enjoyment of improving it is all part of it really. again becuase im new to mx's im not too sure of budget yet.
of the brief research i have done around the conversion, the auto is slightly underpowered (has .4 reduction in compression VS manual & Mazda claims about 10 less horsepower for the auto engine), its not a massive figure to be honest.. & not having dríven a manual na6 before i dont know the the difference. one of you mentioned that the auto remain that way & not be chopped and buggered, where in fact it is mostly all bolt on work from what i have read from people in US who have done it. parts needed are:
1. 5/6 speed g-box
2. clutch, flywheel, spigot & throw out bearings
3. pedal set
4. manual wiring harness
5. manual ECU
6. clutch cylinder
7. slave cylinder
8. power train frame
9. clutch lines
10. speedometer cable
11. tail shaft?
my end goal for the car would be along the lines of a mildly tuned, track use.. takes part in skid pan days, weekend drives through twisties.. clean/tough looking etc. i think with any true car enthusiast, its inevitable that you spend a decent amount of $$$.
the s15 is a great car..not sure about 'another Japanese car that slipped thru the cracks', if anything one of the most popular nissan FR cars in the market. i dont want to sell it but in all honesty need some change & want to experience different things, if i was loaded or jay leno's nephew id keep both (there are financial reasons). ive got a solid offer on the 15 & i think it will proceed with sale, of the remiander funds i will get a comfy everyday run around.. with the spare funds going towards the manual conversion.. well thats the plan anyways.
any other helpful comments welcome.
