WASP wrote:Hi as someone said earlier look around and buy one that has had the money and time spent on it. I currently have an SE 180rwhp. I did have an NA8 with a ROTREX supercharger, similar HP. The supercharged engine was much better than the Turbo, linear power, Turbo, little until 4000rpm then hang on to your hat. My ideal would be a Supercharged NB. Food for thought.

Thats because you have an SE and SE turbo setup needs a lot of work to get any good.

Those S15s are lovely. Still a few good ones around too.
I looked hard at them years ago but decided they were a Gran Tourer suitable for long open road trips and I never did that.
As you get older, straight line speed is less attractive than something that is fun in corners. That's me anyhow.
A turbo would never interest me on an MX5 but a few more HP would be very welcome.

 an S15 suitable for long open road trips?
There is nothing grand tourer about a 200sx.

Compared to an MX5 they're awesome at long trips :D

I'd much rather take my S13 on a long trip than the MX, waaaaaay more comfortable.

Mr Morlock wrote:A 200sx is probably a good jigger but its never going to have much general appeal- another Japanese car that slipped thru the cracks. Racing cars can be very expensive and can be a phase and its something that will drop off the twig unless it is in the blood and one has the facilities or money etc to keep doing it. Chose between a house, a career, education etc- it becomes a balance for most people others just keep buying the jewellery and see little return in the long run

Your joking right? Clearly your going on opinion again, these cars are very popular, go to a JDM meet and open your eyes. Plenty of assorted Nissans including the 200sx. There is nothing expensive about racing an MX5 or any car really. At the start there is a bit of expense to get the car how you want it but after that its maintenance and track day payment. Especially if its only a few times a year at club level. Comp work is more costly.

hmmm.. some interesting & informative points by some..to clarify somethings here..

lets not compare the 2 cars.. (its like comparing apples & oranges) they are both very different & have their unique attributes. now when i originally purchased the mx i didnt have too much knowledge around it & really just went with the flow.. it was also bought for my partner to drive.. hence buying an auto, otherwise no way i would buy an auto mx, i was actually wanting an NB..but since owning the na for a while.. it does have a certain character about it that you cant find in newer cars, more so than the nb (haven dríven both now). in terms of selling the na im not sure anyone would even buy it being auto & i wouldn't get much, also my mentality is having gone through purchasing it & to re-sell id lose money either way, it's a project /hobbie..& will be built up over a longer course of time (not too sure how long), the enjoyment of improving it is all part of it really. again becuase im new to mx's im not too sure of budget yet.

of the brief research i have done around the conversion, the auto is slightly underpowered (has .4 reduction in compression VS manual & Mazda claims about 10 less horsepower for the auto engine), its not a massive figure to be honest.. & not having dríven a manual na6 before i dont know the the difference. one of you mentioned that the auto remain that way & not be chopped and buggered, where in fact it is mostly all bolt on work from what i have read from people in US who have done it. parts needed are:

1. 5/6 speed g-box
2. clutch, flywheel, spigot & throw out bearings
3. pedal set
4. manual wiring harness
5. manual ECU
6. clutch cylinder
7. slave cylinder
8. power train frame
9. clutch lines
10. speedometer cable
11. tail shaft?

my end goal for the car would be along the lines of a mildly tuned, track use.. takes part in skid pan days, weekend drives through twisties.. clean/tough looking etc. i think with any true car enthusiast, its inevitable that you spend a decent amount of $$$.

the s15 is a great car..not sure about 'another Japanese car that slipped thru the cracks', if anything one of the most popular nissan FR cars in the market. i dont want to sell it but in all honesty need some change & want to experience different things, if i was loaded or jay leno's nephew id keep both (there are financial reasons). ive got a solid offer on the 15 & i think it will proceed with sale, of the remiander funds i will get a comfy everyday run around.. with the spare funds going towards the manual conversion.. well thats the plan anyways.

any other helpful comments welcome.
J.

I still think you would spend more converting the auto then you would lose is the sale.

If we were all concerned at the cost or return of our passion none of us would be here.

There is no right or wrong ...

True Kev, very true. Sometimes I wish people had told me there was a better way / beat me over the head a bit harder with what they were saying though.

............ but I'd try to learn from hindsight.

No Superchips.

No Alfas.

No sports exhausts on Ford Capris (the UK squashed Cortina, not the Oz MX5 "competitor").

No big motors in Standard Tens (JEEZ!).

No big wheels on Triumph Heralds.

No 2.5 injected TR6 motors in Spitfires (OMG).

Etc, etc, etc, sadly.
