Gee thats handy. Pull up at your local drive through coffee shop in the pouring rain, and have to get out and get them from the boot..
Great thinking there....

.. just guessing, you know the latch/handle on top of that glove box/centre console.. maybe if you pull that down you can access the boot? you know in some cars previously, the backseat arm rest has a hole into the boot area (in my dad's old Volvo they had one)

That's a scenario I've never even contemplated let alone faced. :?

If the fuel tank's in the current location then that's not very likely!

The cup holders can be removed and/or relocated. There are alternative 'slots' for them towards the front on each side of the transmission tunnel near the shifter.
As for where to store them? Centre console or 'cubby' in the rear wall between the seats? You could use the glovebox but the ND doesn't have one! :?

Something else you may not have noticed but in the image above, fitted between the seats, at the base of the rear bulkhead, just behind the cupholders, is a DVD player..... WTF!

Someone doesn't like the look of the cup holders - me too, I hate round ones.
Someone thinks they'll get in the way of gear changes - must have arms as long as a gorilla and never bends at the wrist to change gear.
Someone doesn't like it that they are removable, and now...

This is unbelievable. You need to take a look at the MX-5 structure to see that it's a bloody long way from the back of the seat to the boot. Even if there was nothing in the way, as there is, you'd need to be built like a gorilla.....

The lower handle above the cup holders is for the lid of a cubby compartment. The handle above that will be for the roof release when it's retracted....just like on the current model.

.. well, wrong guess then
Nevertheless, if they are removable.. I'll remove it and store it away. Don't want nobody drinking (or eating) in the car and spilling things over..

Overall, I still like the ND and could get it in the future.. now, it all comes down to the price

But that's where the soft top is.

Hey thanks markwid for the cupholder photo. Are they like the foldable SAAB ones that create themselves out of the dash?

Location isn't that bad, at least you won't be crab-arm shifting gears like you do on a NB.... but pity the fools who are left handed drinkers :P

It is really far back enough and out of the way of elbows. Just sit in your current MX-5 and you can tell this will not be a problem.

Still think a modern equivalent of mariner blue would look incredible;

- at least back there there's little chance of hot coffee spilling anywhere near your groin!

What a load of prattle about cup holders.. It's a sports car not an espresso bar.
