Thanx Rog, I'll keep him in mind for next time.

And Dave, you are dead right, mate, extra $200....pffft, nothing, when you know the extra processes,

MX-5 program manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto:
"There is about a 10kg difference in weight between the base Roadster and its better-equipped Roadster GT sibling."

Thought as much. The Australian specs say Roadster and Roadster GT manuals are both 1009kg. That didn't make much sense to me given the extra gear in the GT.

Interesting fact:
"While all gearboxes in the latest generation Mazdas are in-house SkyActiv Drive units, the 1.5-litre variant’s 6-speed automatic is built by Aisin in Japan - a company owned by Toyota."

I guess there should be no surprise that some paints are very tricky and not every panel shop has any interest in doing piddly jobs. You also cannot replicate a factory finish / performance spec with a rattle can because the technology is different. You don't paint 2 packs at home safely.

The articles which I had not read from John Mellor publication ( no longer subscribe) are very good for a summary and opinions but one thing is pretty clear that MA and Benders are taking a big punt on 1500cc- very brave I think. They will also being hanging out for a folding hard top and hope that sales will hold up with the new and very good looking ND.

I was very sceptical of the advice Mazda making their own gearboxes- but apparently thats correct ( in the article) . Car co's generally avoid doing much more than design and assemble and leave virtually all components to those companies that specialise and make the investments and train the staff. The Japanese have used their preferred partners for generations sometimes these are shared by other makers. Mazda have and maybe still use Koito for lighting and from memory Koito are tied financially to Toyota. I guess there is a back story about the gearbox.

Morlock is correct in this respect. The great VW combine has much of their DSG made in China.

Part of the reason why DSG has such a lousy reputation for reliability.

"The better-equipped GT will most probably outsell the Roadster two-to-one." This is a surprise considering the $6000 premium, but i guess the buy-new market likes the bells and whistles. Still no Club model for Oz :(

More fascinating reading here:

We can thank the GFC for getting the completely new ND. Otherwise the ND would have arrived in 2012 as a reskinned NC!

I had convinced myself that a new ND would be the perfect"last" sports car for a 67 year old enthusiast.

Today I drove one and now have no desire to own one,at least not a 1.5!!I loved the looks(except the 4wd ride height that has been photo shopped down in the brochure!),interior roof operation and handling .Grip and turn in both great.

But the gearing and power are spoiling a great little car.If you want performance you have to wring it out and that by itself isn't an issue but the moonshot gearing means that any spirited twisties driving would see you barely using 3rd and certainly never 4th while at the other end of the scale 5th and 6th have absolutely no grunt. The motor is smooth and likes to rev so I just don't understand why it is so high geared, although all mx5 since the NB8A have been in my opinion.I wouldn't have thought a penalty of about .7 lt/100 based on my experience with the NC would be a huge factor in their thinking in setting the gearing up so high.

I think that an NC set up like my old one with some decent suspension and exhaust and a 4.1 diff is going to become a great option when the market is flooded with trade ins. Most standard NC owners will probably not notice the high gearing as much given what they are coming from.

So i think i will wait and see what the 2 litre is like but probably end up keeping the LE and doing the NC thing as well and still have thousands of dollars left over!

Sorry but i don't think it has hit the"spiritual successor" to the NA mark.I know that they will sell every one they get but think with the passing of time and the dying down of the thrill of a new model it may not be the giant leap forward I was hoping for.

Ducks and runs for cover!!!

$200 bucks for the soul red paint is good value (not sure I would go around again with the colour tho).

Best value, however is that for a mere 3.8% more $$$$ (in the GT's) you get an extra 33% torque...

I hope that in the second hand market three/four years from now a 2L remains a 3.8% premium over a 1.5L ... :|

As for this (one of the Go Auto articles)

"In its first year at least, Mazda is counting on selling 125 MX-5s per month, with the 2.0L engine models outstripping the 1.5L by a ratio of 48/52."

I take it that it is that ratio because there is no 2l availability for the first three four months.... if that is the ratio for year two I would be surprised.

Congrats to anyone that has an ND, btw...

(My not getting the 1.5 is my problem)

Not sure if this has been shared here or not.

Here is the Canadian version of the ND owners manual.
