The GRAND Tour....

Postby atlast » Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:30 am

When I bought the MX5 one of the criteria was to get my wife (who used to ride her own motorcycle back in the 70s) back into the open air. She doesn't want to pillion with me, so the obvious choice was an open-air car, a convertible. But I've told you all that before.
So after some wonderful months of ownership, and a few short trips, it seemed like a good idea to do a little more; a tour, if you will.
Now we started out aware of the limitations on boot space, but we've always packed pretty light, even when we go somewhere in the 'big' car, so we didn't think that would be an issue.
The general plan was to proceed on from Goulburn, where we had a church commitment, last Sunday, and head down to Victoria and visit some very old friends in Drouin, down in the Gippsland area. Needless to say, I've ridden most of the roads I planned on driving, some them multiple times, but Hazel has not even seen most of them. So the plan was to find as many twisty roads as possible, and be back in Goulburn for Easter Sunday. I had no idea how the Mazda would be as a touring car; I've done over 1,000kms in a hit on the bike, many times, and likewise in many of the cars we've had, but the biggest trip we'd done in the MX5 was Wollongong to Newcastle and back in a day. That was fine, but this was up-scale from that.
We left Goulburn in the middle of the day and over-nighted at Batemans Bay; a twisties trip down the South Coast wouldn't be complete without a run down (or up) the Clyde. Weather? Fantastic. In fact for the whole week we had the top up for a total of about an hour, for some rain; the rest of the time it was top-down motoring.
We stayed on the waterfront at the Big4 resort; apart from the cabin-type accommodation featuring a separate toilet and bathroom between each three cabins, I recommend it.

Quick trip into town for an early-morning coffee and then we were off south, to Bega, and then up the mountain again.

Back in September I had ridden from Bega up to Bombala via Myrtle Mountain and Mount Darragh; these both are true rider's roads and since our destination that day was Jindabyne, it made sense to drive them as well. If you get the chance, do these roads!!

We went north from Bombala, and turned left off the Monaro Highway and onto the Snowy River way to Dalgety, and then across through the wind-farms and into the western side of Jindabyne. Some long fairly straight roads, but fabulous high-country scenery to compensate.
We stayed at the motel where our motorcycle group has its annual get-together, Siesta Villa, in East Jindabyne, about 8 kays out of town on the road to Cooma. Again, I can highly recommend this place, Richard and Sharon are wonderful hosts, and the restaurant is great. Room tarrif is under $100 outside of peak times, and this includes continental breakfast.

The MX-5 is a terrific touring car the only shortcoming perhaps is that being a small car and relatively noisy and "active" they are more tiring than sedans or SUVs etc. For fun and engagement the MX-5 works well. Its easy to pack enough with a bit of thought. I dont blame anyone for not wanting to ride pillion- I would not do it anymore. The truth is that even open air touring in a civilised sports car is still niche travelling. The trip described is for those that appreciate our country- a mighty trip where you can actually drive a car but thats clearly not for everyone judging by those heading for O/seas or just posing around in metro wherever.

Indeed, but as a motorcyclist, I find the "noisy and active" to be a positive rather than a negative.
I admit I didn't buy the car with big trips in mind, and perhaps if I hadn't done this one I too would spent most of the time with it posing round the metro, but as I've posted already, this trip opened my eyes to the car's incredible potential. Anyway, on with the story...
A sudden cold snap had hit the south of the country, and snow was falling on the Alps. Dire predictions of road conditions abounded, but I just couldn't bear driving all the way back to Bombala and down to Cann River, then round the deathly boring Princes Highway, so with crisp air but blue skies we took our chances and headed in through the town and out towards Thredbo, and the fabulous Alpine Highway.
And snow there was;

.... but only down to the edge of the road, and not on it, so our decision was justified with safe driving conditions, and great scenery!
Sadly, heavy winds on the western side of the range meant that the road was in very poor condition, with downed branches and leaf litter making conditions less than ideal, so we tippie-toed down the range, and when we got out of the area, picked up the pace. On one of the further ranges we were treated to the view back to the top of Australia, us and it in glorious sunshine....

The top of Victoria around the Eastern end of the Hume Weir and through to Tallangatta was enjoyable, but not spectacular; we decided not to head down to East Gippsland via the famous Mitta Mitta road, that's for next time.
We stayed over in Benalla, the scampered along the Midland Highway, past Mansfield and through Bonny Doon, which was sunny and suitably serene, and then more twisties through the middle of the Dandenongs; Seville to Cockatoo and down to Packenham where we were forced, finally, on the Melbourne Freeway for a boring hour before reaching our destination in Drouin.

Our old friend has recently had bypass surgery, so he was pretty frail and tired, so we stayed a day and mooched around, and decided overnight that we would spend the next day going to Phillip Island; next instalment.

Cool story.

I'll have to do a solo trip like this one day. My wife gets bad motion sickness.

My wife is fine with cars, but I have to say the way the seats hold you in makes even vigorous cornering comfortable for the passenger. The only thing the car lacks, by design, is a passenger 'holy-cow' handle!!
