My concerns are not with new roads but more in maintaining our existing infrastructure, after all would you let your house fall down around your ears?

PPP Contracts the way of the future.

You have a vested personal interest in your house hence you will pay to maintain your investment. You cannot compare government spending to personal. Government spending is meant to benefit society as a whole. You spending on your house only benefits you.

Yet history has shown that this has mostly benefited those in term ...

Whilst I agree that PPP contracts are the way of the future, it still leaves the question of the maintenance of the investments of the past.

PPP,s are a blight on the community. A total rip off of the public and gouging of citizens often forced on to tollways through no other choice. Unfortunately big business gets far too much support from Politicians who have no real commitment to to the best long term for the electorate.

Business plan to keep their doors open long term and can exist for very long periods plus they are (in general) supported by stockholders who have a vested interest in getting a return.

Politicians are short term and hence only make short term decisions, there is no long term future in politics. Further they require the support of the public who basically have no vested interest in them or there are not enough of them to make a difference.

Getting too far off topic now. PPP are a great method of keeping people like me in jobs so I say more of them.

I don't see any redeeming features of PPP's at all. Govts like Aust can borrow at far better rates than they offered by the PPP consortiums.

It's difficult to accurately scope big projects and someone needs to take on the risk if the cost of construction is underestimated or the traffic forecasts aren't met so to me they are two advantages of PPP's.

Does the OP understand who owns and funds which road?

It could the responsibility of the local council, state government or federal government.

The other point is this.. If you see a pothole or similar then REPORT it. The powers at be can't attempt to fix it unless they are made known of it.

And anyone who think the roads "of our parents" were better then today... Remember the Pacific Hwy... enough said.

rjastra2, The roads are owned by the public, funded by the public and seemingly mismanaged by the responsible authorities. PPP's are the immediate solution, although I would like to see more local funding (Superannuation, for example) but it does not answer the question of managing the existing infrastructure and our roads will continue to deteriorate until a solution is found.

Well on toll ways you get to pay again and again and if you don't pay they fine you and add outrageous penalties. In Melb it is not uncommon for people to spend a $100 per week back and forth to work on the main tollway which is commonly referred to as a car park. One of the best new pieces of road in Melb is Peninsula link which is terrific and it's not tolled. Good roads and good public transport can save a community a great deal of money and it's a pity Pollies have not worked it out instead let business screw the public.
