ANYONE KNOW A CHEAP WAY TO MOVE A HARD TOP FROM bRISBANE TO mELBOURNE. MY MX5 IS UNDRIVEABLE AT THE MOMENT.

they can be cheaper than you would expect for odd and larger items.

I recently bought 4 mags and tyres and had them shipped from nsw to Qld for $130, door to door. Very reasonable I thought.

Freight is about doing some homework and understanding what is required ie getting freight to a depot packing it and getting it delivered to somewhere or having the consignee pick it up. Cheap is not the right criteria - reliability time and goods undamaged are others. I used E go once and it was a pretty rough outfit Not expensive but I had to pick up and the packaging was woefully inadequate fortunately it was a sturdy item. A hard top would need to go on a pallet I would think and need to be packed carefully. Door to door sounds good but consignee needs to check that someone is at the address to take delivery otherwise goods can end up back in a depot. Shop around.

Agree with Mr Morlock here, the hardtop is big and easily damaged (which is why it's almost impossible to import a hard-top from O/S since sellers will NOT guarantee them against damage).

Hardtops are most safely transported when mounted ON an MX5.

e-Go is great if you can package your goods yourself properly and don't expect them to treat them like "your best china".

I've used e-go, pack 'n send, toll, startrack ... wouldn't trust any of them to actually take any care with an item unfortunately. I've had good experiences with all of them as well as some bad - most of the bad being larger items.

Seats from WA were lost for a month and when were finally found the packaging was badly damaged. Luckily the seats were ok ... roll bar from a wreckers in NSW the freight company lost all the attached fittings and scratched the bar, packaging was half torn off. The seller had photos proving all was attached and condition of the bar. Despite not his fault he very kindly refunded plenty for me to buy and make my own and some can spray covered the scratch ... wheels/tyres from QLD the pallet and packaging was damaged and couple wheels chipped. Once again seller had photo proof ...

Having the item insured against damage during freight costs more, but is sometimes worth it, but you must check the item carefully while delivery person is present or they won't pay out ...

For wheels and similar that can't or are near impossible to damage, but some couriers will still find a way....., I will use E-go, for more delicate bits that can't be damaged I have used Pack 'n Send with good success, no where near as cheap as e-go, about a third more on the quoted price from e-go, but the bits arrived undamaged and the price also included Pack 'n Send actually packing the bits as well plus insurance, all I had to do was get it to the shop front.

For other stuff, I will do the road trip to pick up the bits if they can't be damaged in transit.

I had my first hard top sent from Melbourne to Brisbane via e-go, got here in one piece.

I ended up with a couple little nicks and scratches (it wasn't fully wrapped), but honestly they could have been on it before it was sent.

Might be easier and you might end up with a better hard top by buying a gross one locally (if it's cheap), and getting it resprayed.
