soft tops

Postby rossburns » Mon Jul 21, 2014 9:14 pm

hi all.
been trying to decide which way to go with a new soft top on my na6 for the last couple of months- don't want to start ww3 on here but what are your thoughts, am leaning towards cloth top with glass window, also has to be compatable with brown davis roll bar :NA6:

I can't offer any insight on NA fitment, but I've replaced an NB soft top with cloth (mohair) in my garage.
Price was good, compared to the ridiculous number Mazda wanted for a genuine vinyl piece.. I think the place was called Prestige Soft Tops.
They wanted $500 to fit it, so naturally the thing to do was say no thanks and do it myself. I've since learned (through experience) that $500 isn't all that crazy, and I had to go back to get some flappy bits glued down, after I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do with them (VERY vague instructions. I'm talking "Step 1: Remove the original soft top").

Mohair is very nice. Supposed to stay black longer, but I have only had it on for 6 months. Looks good, feels good.

And my final tip: Don't be afraid to remove the whole frame from the car to get to those weird underside bolts. This will save you hours of weirding around with all the strange socket connectors and angles you can find, trying to reach the damn things.

Best thing is to find a good NB top with frame will bolt straight in to your NA.
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

Mohair is great, but I would say that, wouldn't I?

Might be heavier though, which might matter to you if you're going on the track?
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Agree that mohair with a glass screen is the best you can get. Alternatively, an NB top with a glass screen. An NB top with a zip-out glass screen is even better, but they are as common as hen's teeth.

I'm tempted to cannibalise my spare NA top and use its zipper to make my own zip-out glass screen, but am afraid of ruining two soft-tops!
