This is forum is often living proof that guys buy things based just on dollars- the cheaper the better. We all do it to some extent. A recent ep of "Drive it" did a comparo of brake products for a Golf- this was a test done by engineers. The old OEM brakes were tested and then a so called OEM product was bought on line and tested. Only the experts could pick the E markings actually being fakes, The new pads and discs were significantly inferior to the VW oe equipment. Some VW dealers over there only sell OEM and others do have a second but presumably reasonable product at a lower price. Cheap tools are often very poor but knowing what is good value is something that might need a bit of research i.e. chatting with the pros. Some items are so cheap and used so infrequently that they do the job for the occasional use. A cheap rattle gun is probably ok for the few times a year its used but for the mechanic they may last a very short time. Almost everything is made in China - thats the way the world has gone- China the factory.

One of the things I really miss about the US is this place :

http://www.harborfreight.com/

They had this mix of really cheap junk, good enough but still cheap and quite decent lifetime warranty tools. The reviews on the site really helped you sort the good from the bad and I think they also used the feedback to weed out the worst of what they carried. I was able to stock my garage with "good enough" tools for a great price and I bought a lot of them back with me.

I really wish someone would franchise it out here because some of the brand name stuff we pay an arm and a leg for is no better these days.

Prices didn't look that different from the SCA brand at SuperCheap... And is probably not much different in quality either.

Sad fact is that We have to pay a minor premium in Australia due to the small population, and when you factor that in, I can't see much difference (other than product range, and again that would be due to our small market size)

In saying that, you'd wonder why our country needs to have the 2nd largest/baddest fight jet fleet in the world? I guess when you're PM you can ignore hard facts like the above!
